Open up the cannister. Swipe rag along the inside line. Brush out remaining junk. Slide back in. Move on to the next part.

Cleaning guns shouldn't be this therapeutic, Lucasta mused as she worked the rag around the plasma container. Weapons that were designed to kill and harm, designed to inspire fear and awe. And yet cleaning one could make her feel oddly at peace. As she finished, she checked the calibrations on the rifle. Perfect.

She rose to her feet and moved over to the firing range where two Mantellian soldiers were practicing. Placing the required earmuffs onto her head, she pushed the goggles further onto her face and took aim. Breathing in, she relaxed her shoulders a little and narrowed her eyes until even the dull echo of other shots faded to the background. Just her and the target.

It had taken a while to calm down the night before and she felt torn between being upset about what happened and enraged. There was a multitude of emotions swirling around and all of them were contradicting one another. Her eyes narrowed further, brow crinkling together as she unleashed 'death' upon the target further down the lane.

"That little shit..."

Margo moved over to take her place in the firing line. She picked a spot away from the centre, ideally away from notice. The two Mantellians paused in their fire to whisper and nudge each other, following rumours of this fiery Lieutenant that had dared to give the base Commander hell for something or other. The details weren’t known, save for the fact that their Commander had emerged from the encounter looking pale and meek, and had immediately ordered patrols around the border to be doubled. It meant more work, but the base seemed safer for it.

She preferred to practice here, where she was relatively unknown. Getting used to aiming with only one eye was tough going. The last year had been tough going. True, her HUD makes necessary corrections for her, but she’ll be damned if she lets herself rely on that. More so if she lets anyone catch on to her weakness. Or, her perceived weakness.

She squeezes off another few rounds at the target, red plasma flaring across the range, controlled bursts of her own rage made real. Somewhere in the back of her mind, a memory flickers, suddenly. I wonder how long it took Sizemore to adjust.

She frowns to herself. She misses him. She hasn’t realised.

“... Who knew this would be something I’d want your advice on...?”

She barely notices the Lieutenant arriving, though the series of bolts she squeezes onto her target does not go unnoticed. Both Mantellians possessed below average abilities, so this attack had her briefly look up to see who had joined her. Margo Faulkner. She blinked, then turned her attention back to her practice.

With careful deliberation, she ignored the woman's presence, though her gaze flitted towards her target every so often as if to gauge her own abilities when compared to the redhead's.

Abysmal.

A grimace drew over her features and she turned back to her own work with redoubled effort.

She can’t see their muttering and pointing. Not with them stood on her so called ‘blind side’. She does mark the extended pauses between their abysmal attempts at blasting the target. One particularly poor shot misses the target altogether, scorching a burn into the back wall.

Margo lowers her rifle, turning around to let her see them. To let her see the one responsible for the appalling shot standing with one hand over his eye as he fires. They are mocking her. Not for long...

She takes a half step towards them, and they flee. She narrows her eye, catching their insignia as they retreat. She’ll make them regret that, though not until they’ve stewed for a little while.

Eventually, her gaze naturally falls to the one remaining soldier on the range. She watches, her brow quirked in that way it always seems to.

The shot burning the wall catches her attention and she turns, eyes narrowing as she spots the reason for the sudden cessation of bolts. Jackasses. As Margo turns, her single step having sent off the little pests in their rat-like scurrying, Lucasta offers her a single nod.

Her expression fades a bit from the stern look, softening before she turns back to her rifle, firing another round. It misses.

"... Damnit."

It soon becomes clear that the only shots on the range are those leased from Lucasta's rifle. A glance to the right would show that the Lieutenant is gone.

No, not gone. Margo has repositioned, just behind her fellow ODMC. There's a bond between them that cannot be broken, however once she might have wished to.
Once? Doesn't she still feel that way..?

She studies, closely, the minutia of her companion's form, stance, looking for the tells of why Ren's capabilities aren't quite as Margo remembered.

Finally, as there comes a break in the fire, she speaks.

"Are you injured?"

Her first instinct screams at her to turn around and face the interloper with the barrel of her rifle. Thankfully she's not that jumpy. She looks down, wondering if her knee is visibly damaged before furrowing her brow. The regulation trousers don't quite manage to hide the slight bulge of bandages.

"Just bruises, sir."

The words leave her mouth before she realises and a grimace replaces her curious look. She refrains from turning, somehow unable to consider meeting her eyes. Eye. A single green gaze of judgement no doubt waiting to happen. Though in her mind, she recalls it alight with amusement that kept from showing on her face, a brief almost upturn of her lips giving her away.

"... I'm... Getting used to the different output. It's a-" She stops herself from making more excuses, just waiting.

"It's an excuse."

She clips, sensing the truth. Was it obvious, or does she simply know Ren too well?
She sets her own rifle down, propping her hands on her hips.

"So, which is it? Body? Mind? ... Both?"

She tilts her head, letting her fringe fall away from her right eye to settle over her left. For a moment, for a beat, the scar and the eyepatch are concealed. Just long enough to let her remember, and forget, sending her tumbling backwards into the self that she had thought extinguished. Stubbornly, the remnants remain. A threat to her newfound purpose, but a beautiful one at that. A weed, with delicate flowers. Somehow, she just can't seem to kill the root.

It catches her off guard, and the words have left her lips before she even realises them her own.

"... Mine's both."

Her eyes widen at the words and her mouth opens before closing again as she doesn't actually know what to reply. Well, that's another excuse. She knows. Her tongue briefly wets her lips before she too sets her rifle down, hand lingering over the trusted metal as she considers her answer. Times like these were rare, precious.

Eventually, she looks up, meeting Margo's single eye with her own. Green on green, she briefly muses.

"Both. Mostly... mind."

Breathing in as if to speak more, she just uselessly exhales, another pause.

"I don't know why, though. I'm fine. Nothing terrible happened. I didn't... Nothing happened."

Margo harrumphs to herself, the crease on her forehead deepening for a moment. She intends to push the matter, but in her own way. She takes up her rifle once more, slipping into the next bay along. Tucking the stock in against her shoulder, she takes aim, and holds there.

“Did I ever tell you what exactly happened to my eye?”
