Virtus MKIIb Assault Armour: 

The Virtus MKII Assault Armour is the economic successor of the Republic Special Weapons Division's MKI prototype, which was deemed far too costly to equip even the Republic's smaller special forces units let alone entire brigades of advanced infantry. The MKII cut back on many advanced features such as composite mandalorian iron outer shell, micronised mandalorian skinsuit, personal shields and automatic kolto foam injectors. The result was a similar but drastically more cost effective battle suit capable of operating within the original parameters albeit with a greatly reduced durability.

One of the most notable features of the Virtus Assault Armour was the deviation from the more traditional gender based chest plating, which the creator of the Virtus project, Dr. Bannin, considered to be a "pointless and needlessly expensive practice". The thinking behind genderised plating was to minimize blunt trauma caused by secondary impacts, i.e. The armour plating striking the body, by having a more form fitting armour, however this required a more tailored fit for anyone required to wear armour. Thus, the skinsuit was developed so that more standardized plating could be produced and therefore drastically cut down on costs. This made it almost impossible to tell the difference between male and female troopers when fully clad in the armour giving the impression to those outside of the equipped regiments that they only recruited men, something that the media criticized the military for.

The MKIIb is the Naval variant of the Army's advanced assault armour and comes with improved filters, an extended airtank and a "lock-down" system for use in orbital drops.

 

 Components:

 Titanium Skinsuit - - Sandwiched between the external plating and the internal padding is a thick black armoured bodysuit. This suit has numerous functions, small but vital to the safety and survival of the wearer. The bodysuit is made of a titanium-based material, making it very strong and yet very flexible. It also serves as another layer of protection against ballistics attacks and is coated with a heat resistant material to disperse heat from Plasma weapons. Underneath the armoured bodysuit is a non-Newtonian gel-filled layer, this gel layer regulates the temperature of the suit and can reactively change its density to conform to the wearer's shape. The hydrostatic gel layer can also be pressurized to various levels to potentially save the wearer’s life should the wearer be subjected to high G forces or a high velocity impact; however, over pressurizing this layer can cause nitrogen embolisms. The gel is also poisonous if, through a rupture, it is inducted into the user's bloodstream.

 

Reinforced Titanium Outer Plating - - The outer shell of the Virtus armour is comprised of a fairly thick titanium plating which covers the chest, arms, hips, legs, calves, feet and hands. It is very resilient, can take significant punishment, and is highly resistant to small arms fire. While enough shots will breach the outer shell, the suit can take a few glancing blows without compromising the armour.

 

Refractive Plate Coating - - The outer plating of the armour is covered with a refractive coating to help disperse the heat experienced from energy weapons. However, one or two direct hits from any plasma weapon will compromise the armour plating.

 

Magnetic Holster Strips - - Very small yet powerful magnets placed on the legs, and back of the suit and is used to hold any equipment with a magnetic property. The suit also contains an electromagnetic system on the boots of the suit that allow its wearer to stay attached to a metal surface in Zero G environments and can be toggled on or off by the wearer.

 

MIRROR Heads-Up Display system - - This allows the user to store and review mission content and receive secure real-time mission data. In addition, every current issue helmet is equipped with low-light image enhancement, which is capable of marking, when identified, hostile units in red, friendlies in green and non-combatants in blue.

 

Pressure Seal - - The pressure seal is a vital component that keeps the system airtight, underwater or in space. The seal is very strong but will break under extreme pressure, such as in a high velocity impact or when the hydrostatic gel has been over-pressurized.

 

Lock-down system - - The lock-down system protects muscles and joints from traumatic, high-impact injuries by seizing the suit into a rigid posture through modifying the density of the hydrostatic gel layer.

Weaponry

R-21 Personal Defense Weapon

Sidearm

The BlasTech Industries R-21 is an example of a typical blaster pistol, and is a standard-issue military sidearm in the Republic Navy. A short to medium range combat weapon, the R-21 has an optimum range of thirty meters. Its armour-piercing blaster bolts are still effective, though somewhat less accurate, at up to four times that distance.

A semi-automatic weapon, it can also be modified to fire in short bursts and has a low-power stun setting, capable of knocking out a Human for up to ten minutes. However, firing too many rounds in rapid succession will drain the power pack in less than twenty seconds, and the wielder runs the risk of overheating the internal components and causing an explosive overload.

The R-21's blaster gas chamber carries enough gas for five hundred shots, and a standard power pack supplies energy for one hundred shots. The energy pack can be replaced in approximately five seconds by a skilled soldier, and a generator can charge a drained pack in around fifteen minutes. The weapon is particularly popular among naval forces, being able to pierce most body armor without risking stray bolts piercing the hull of the vessel.

S-309 Carbine

Patrol

Building on the success of the S-310 Assault Rifle, the Navy decided to commision several variations of the weapon system for widespread implementation throughout the service. They needed a small, compact and lightweight carbine to fill many roles, including use in pilot survival kits and small arms for mechanised marine units. The result was the S-309 Carbine, a stripped down version of the S-310 in every sense. Its fitted stock was removed and replaced with a lightweight folding version, and the barrel length considerably shortened. Both of these changes significantly reducing the overall weight, but more importantly, size of the blaster. It could now fit comfortably inside a starfighter cockpit or within the cabin of the walkers implemented by the Navy’s Marine units. Also, it is worthy to note that several Specialisations among the many Marine units within the Navy have adopted the S-309 because of its ability to provide a high rate of fire at a light weight, allowing them to defend themselves adequately while boosting their effectiveness at their respective tasks.

These modifications did come at a price, however. The shortened barrel decreased both the optimum and maximum effective range of the carbine, and the decision was made to remove the attached 2x optics for the more traditional ‘Iron Sights’ as the addition of optics would be counter productive. However, with that extra weight removed, the engineers managed to include a burst fire mode to the fire selector, something the top brass approved of as the weapon is primarily designed to be used by those not well versed in front line infantry combat, where burst firing is taught as standard. Now the carbine has the traditional ‘Single’ and ‘Auto’ modes, along with ‘Burst’ where the trigger is depressed once resulting in three blaster bolts leaving the barrel in near instantaneous succession

 S-310 Assault Rifle

The standard issue Republic Navy blaster rifle, created by BlasTech Industries after the Treaty of Coruscant. BlasTech won the contract, over many other arms companies, after a lengthy test and in service field trial period. The S-310 delivered exactly on what the Navy had requested, a robust, easy to maintain, efficient and reliable weapons system capable of withstanding lengthy combat deployments in all environs, something that had been an issue during the Great Galactic War.

The casing of the S-310 and its bulky appearance first caused issues among the units assigned to test the rifle, sighting its lack of ergonomic forethought a hinderance to the handling of the weapon. However, after several months of testing, less than one dozen replacements had to be issued as the casing held up better than all other competitors under the rigours of combat.

The S-310 comes equipped with a 2x telescopic scope as standard, enabling the standard Crewman or Marine to better engage targets at an increased distance without sacrificing its abilities at the regular combat distance. The large gas capacity of the rifle has also proven a boon, as when deployed from a Navy vessel during testing, Marines only had to carry the one gas canister equipped in the rifle. For other models they had to carry one or even two replacements, limiting the number of specialised pieces of equipment they could carry.

S-311 Battle Rifle

Another variation of the standard issue S-310, and the result of the Navy’s wish to provide a combat rifle with increased capabilities for its Marine forces. The S-311 boasts a significantly higher compliment of tibanna gas canisters and energy cells than its predecessors, allowing the marine to double his pre-loaded shot count and reduce the need to carry exchanges on his belt.

The most notable additions made to the rifle were an advanced CWS and a Scope to HUD targeting system. The CWS (Common Weapon Sight) increases magnification from x2 (S-310) to x4, enabling greater combat performance over open combat environments. The Scope to HUD system is mounted under the main optics close to the main body of the weapon, when linked to a Marine helmet equipped with a compatible combat HUD (Heads-up Display) it displays a crosshair on the HUD, enabling quick and rapid target acquisition, even without the rifle raised into the full ready position.

Such additions, though desirable, greatly increased the size and weight of the rifle. As such, it was usually reserved for units that were not required to carry a specialised kit into battle, such as the Rifleman or Marksman.

X-52 Squad Assault Cannon

To meet the growing need for a squad based suppression weapon after their success during the Great Galactic War, the X-52 was developed for the Navy from the Army version X-50. The result; a lighter, shorter and overall more compact weapon that could now easily be stowed inside the cramped confines of many Naval deployment vessels, including the single man Rapier MkIV Drop Pod. More importantly, it could be easily maneuvered by well trained individuals in the close quarter combat situation of boarding and defending Navy vessels, while ultimately meeting its intended purpose of providing unparalleled levels of suppression previously unavailable to Marine units.

Boasting impressive cooling capabilities and a fast rate of fire, the X-52 or SAC (Squad Assault Cannon) delivers an effective barrage of blaster fire onto targets as far out as four hundred meters. On top of this, and despite the downsize from its predecessor the X-50, the engineers involved in its design were able to retain the substantial sized gas canister, allowing the suppressive fire it provides to be maintained over a greater period of time. However, replacing said canister in combat can be hazardous as it takes usually twice the time of the standard issue S-310 Assault Rifle, requiring the Gunner’s squadmates to pick up the slack during this time. In order to make the X-52 as compact as it, one option did have to be sacrificed during development. The fire selector mechanism was removed, locking the cannon into auto fire mode.
