As they travel from Margo Faulkner's abandoned apartment on Coruscant, Eskkaar and Lucasta end up talking about the past fives years. Confronted with the troubles they both went through, the conversation turns to a rather sensitive topic. In the back of the bus, hidden from the prying eyes and ears of their comerades in front, the two continue their conversation.

Participants: Lucasta Ren, Eskkaar Ragnarson.

In transit

It was always difficult to see weakness in the people she cared about. Not in those she expected to see it, horrible as that might sound. Her mother, for instance, had frequent moments in which she broke down and lamented the death of her husband. She wasn't necessarily strong or weak, but Lucasta expected to see these break downs after a while. With people she knew to be strong, it always hurt.

Lychus was one. He wasn't someone she considered weak at all, but when it came to Felix, the man was an unpredictable timebomb. Gerfried could never be in the same room as Lychus for long, or there'd be furious shouting and death threats. Nonetheless, he learned to swallow his rage during operations, another sign of strength. Eskkaar was another. He'd been her superior officer long before the Gav went down and in a way, he'd always be that. But he was also someone she considered to be one of, if not the closest friend she had. Point of conflict in their professional life, perhaps, but they were both capable of not letting it get in the way.

Right now, however, as she watched him sink into his seat, face hidden by his hand as his throat worked to help him speak the words stuck there, it hurt. Her hand in his was gripped tight enough to hurt had she not been a Zabrak. She returned the grip, then shifts a bit so she's no longer resting against him. Offering him a little bit of space, whilst waiting patiently.

He could feel it crumbling, the wall he'd built around the pain, allowing him to function and even crack a smile, despite each one feeling like a betrayal to their memory. Why should he be able to do that, the simplest of things?

The sharp tang of blood, the chemical odor of blaster emissions and the wholesome fullness of freshly disturbed earth. Their smell still fills his nose, even here, on a bus weaving it's way through the Coruscant skylanes. Will it ever go? He asks himself, even though he doubts it ever could, not when he revisits it almost every time he shuts his eyes.

Several shaky breaths later and he has a hold of himself, at least that's what he tells his conscious mind. In truth, it is the hand he's clasping that manages to keep him whole, keep him grounded and not spiraling into a fresh wave of survivors guilt.

Sitting up he removes his free hand from his face, his eyes misty and bloodshot. Gripping the dog tags around his neck firmly he gives a squeeze to her hand, tearing his face away from the window he half looks at Luca, not quite able to meet her gaze.

"We'd been ordered to protect this survey group. Four scientists, real top of the range academics."

His voice is flat, barely a hint of emotion as he reports what happened in a monotone.

"Keep'em safe from the wildlife on Corstris while they did their tests, figuring out whether the Republic could use it."

"We set up camp, had it all defended well enough. Set out in the mornings, taking the scientists where they needed to be, make sure they didn't get eaten."

"Aside from when on of'em got lost in a storm, it was easy."

He looks away, focusing on the skyline again as a tear wells up at the corner of his eye.

"That's where it all went wrong...."

She shifted a bit, just so that it was a little bit easier for him to look past her and out of the window. If it was her sitting there, and it had been plenty of times, she would not have wanted anyone to be looking at her directly.

Instead, Lucasta just nodded, listening to him patiently whilst keeping her expression open.

Images, sights, visions. Whatever you want to call them. They flashed before his eyes now taking him back there without breaks.

"It..."

He stops, the words catching in his throat. A cough and a rub of his neck later he starts again, his voice a little firmer.

"It was an ambush."

His gaze turns, settling on the chair in front.

"We were returning back to camp on a path we'd used a half dozen times, winding through some trees on a bank either side."

"It was my turn to watch the six, so I was at the end of the line. Watching out for what had been our only issue up until then, predators stalking us."

"Bendak..."

He turns, catching Luca's eye.

"You remember him? From that night at the Veterans Bar."

His gaze drifts, a happy memory intruding on the sadness, out of place but very welcome. Those few hours of good company and cheap booze.

"Anyway, Bendak was on point. Best guess is that an RPG hit him first...he died instantly...I think."

The usually strong voice trails off, pain entering before silence fills the void. He clutches at his leg, forced to remember the horrific injuries one of his closest friends suffered in the same place in his final moments.
